Excel Reissue’s The Joke’s On You Via Southern Lord

SoCal punk-hardcore-metal hybrid outfit EXCEL has remastered their seminal 1989 release, The Joke’s On You.

Originally released via Caroline Records, and produced by Randy Burns (Megadeth, Kreator, Possessed), The Joke’s On You is EXCEL‘s second full-length, which saw wide acclaim from thrash, punk, metal, and skate rock circles, as members have been known to share ramps with pros Christian Hosoi, Eric Dressen, and Tony Alva, and others. Drawing influence from a diverse range of artists including Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Jimi Hendrix, and early era-Corrosion Of Conformity, people often talk of “crossover” acts, but none quite do it as exceptionally well as EXCEL.

The Southern Lord reissue of The Joke’s On You, remastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Poison Idea, Integrity, Nails) contains the twelve tracks featured on the original CD edition, including the track “Blaze Some Hate” — initially released as a 12″ single via Caroline, not the original release of the LP – appears as the closing track of the new reissue/remaster. This isn’t the first time Southern Lord has documented the importance of EXCEL either, as the label also reissued the band’s first album, Split Image, in 2014.
Formed in 1984 from the remains of Los Angeles hardcore band Chaotic Noise, EXCEL caught wide attention of the masses with the release of their Personal Onslaught demo (1985). Fellow Californian thrash crossover influencers, Suicidal Tendencies, accelerated EXCEL into wide acclaim with frontman Mike Muir’s inclusion of them on his Welcome To Venice compilation (1985) and releasing EXCEL‘s Split Image debut LP on the Suicidal Records imprint. Sold out tours and further successful releases soon followed, all which stomped over various sonic terrains whilst always spreading a punk attitude and a harbored love for heavy metal.

Only removable through amputation, so be careful there were you relieve yourselves folks! Jake And Chase of ONI Interviewed In San Francisco, California

Mean Gene of Capital Chaos TV gets the inside scoop from Jake & Chase of ONI at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, California while on tour with Children Of Bodom, Abbath & Exmortus 12/05/16.

In Japanese folklore, the Oni is a malevolent shape-shifting demon, able to take on many guises as it spreads pain and misery. The constantly shifting, ever-evolving sound of Ontario, Canada’s Oni is no less elusive, though unlike their namesake, amidst the brutality and violence, they weave great beauty, and a breadth of heartfelt emotion. “We want the songs that we write to not only move us but move our fans, and stand the test of time” states vocalist Jake Oni. “And though our music is very technical, songwriting is so important to everything we do. The songs need to rock, regardless of how well anyone plays their instrument, and we want to write songs that people can bang their heads to, and have fun with.

Formed in 2014, the initial vision was “to be the band I never got to see”, explains Jake Oni. With their influences rooted in progressive metal, Oni‘s sound can be compared to the genre’s heavy hitters – The Human Abstract, Protest The Hero and Between The Buried And Me – yet they remain truly unique. With Jake Oni handling vocal duties, Martin Andres and Brandon White on guitar, Chase Bryant on bass and Joe Greulich on drums, they are also perhaps the first metal band to feature a Xylo-synth player, in the form of Johnny D, which adds an intriguing dynamic to the nine tracks found on their full-length debut, Ironshore.

Emphasizing Oni‘s many strengths, Ironshore takes listeners on an absorbing ride that provides ample opportunity for head-banging, singing along, and deep introspection. With first single, “Eternal Recurrence”, the band snaps and snarls through a barrage of savage yet controlled violence, counterpointed by passages of unfettered grace, and shredding that is as complex as it is melodic. In 4 minutes and 54 seconds, they demonstrate the breadth of their musical mastery and songwriting abilities, which runs through the course of the album. Lyrically, Jake Oni also refuses to limit himself to a specific theme. “There is no one concept because every song is different. Some songs are about other people, some songs are about me. Some songs are about scenarios or themes that my band and I created. It’s about how the song makes someone feel more than anything.“

Presiding over the sessions was producer Josh Wilbur (Lamb Of God, Gojira), who immediately understood what Oni was trying to achieve. “He brings out the best in our music,” Jake Oni enthuses. “He pushes me vocally to get the best performance, and he knows what I’m trying to say, musically, so we get great results together. He’s a top-notch producer, he knows the metal genre, and has an ear that is amazing for the stuff that Oni does.” Through this connection, the band was able to reach out to Lamb Of God vocalist Randy Blythe, who contributes his inimitable style to “The Only Cure” – one of Ironshore‘s heaviest moments – as well as naming the record.

With their debut under their collective belt and ready for release via Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records on November 25th, 2016, the band has now set their sights on conquering the music world, one show at a time. “Energy and inspiration is what we’re all about,” asserts Jake Oni. “Every day is a new beginning if we make it, so we give our best at every show, for every fan. We live for music, and our fans make our music possible. They give it life, energy and inspiration.”

Sepultura Unveil Music Video For “Phantom Self”

Brazilian heavy metal icons, SEPULTURA, will unleash their upcoming studio album, Machine Messiah, on January 13th through Nuclear Blast. With their new music video “Phantom Self” they provide another thrilling look into their 14th studio release and deliver haunting images and sociocultural criticism in this clip directed by Mauricio Eça.

“‘Phantom Self’ starts with a short intro based on the Brazilian rhythm ‘Maracatú’, original from the Northeast region of Brazil”, explains mastermind Andreas Kisser. “We mixed this very Brazilian sound with violins performed by a Tunisian violin ensemble, the Myriad Orchestra. This was a suggestion from Jens Bogren, the producer of the album, who worked with this orchestra before and he thought it could be a nice combination. We used the violins on different parts of the song and that opened a lot of new possibilities, specially for my guitar parts, it was great to have that conversation between guitar and violins making the part even more special. It’s a very heavy song, with a lot of groove, one of the most complete songs we ever worked with and it’s taking SEPULTURA to a new level!”

Singer Derrick Green adds: “The lyrical idea came from an article that Andreas sent me. It was about a young man who had everything going for him and unfortunately was in a horrific car accident in the 70’s. After the accident, he lost his entire idea of who he was. No one could figure out what was going on inside his mind. He would have glimpses of his former self but doctors realized that chemical elements of his mind had shifted. He had become an entirely different person within himself. There is this element of change that exists within all of us. This ability is important for our evolution as human beings to move forward even after traumatic events.”

Cultural Warfare Sign To M-Theory Audio, Future Kill EP To Be Released January 2017

There’s no denying the impact Bay Area thrash has had on heavy metal. While that recognized glorious time has passed that doesn’t mean the soil is no longer fertile as the region still produces some of the best talent and CULTURAL WARFARE joins the list of noteworthy artists from the area. Hailing from Oakland’s East Bay, Cultural Warfare is made up four seasoned musicians with one common goal, who understand the rich history and lineage that their forefathers built and want to continue that legacy. Recently joined by former Taunted/Annihilation vocalist Jacques Serrano the band has elevated their potential bringing in a singer of his quality opening up the ability of the band to cross over and appeal to a wider audience of metalheads splicing the past with the present to create something the blends aggression with melody perfectly.

M-Theory Audio recognized this immediately when the group debuted a new track, “Defy the Blade” from the forthcoming Future Kill 5-song EP and worked out a deal to assist the band in getting their music heard.

“We are very excited to announce our new partnership between M-Theory Audio/Salem Rose Music and Cultural Warfare,” explains drummer Kevin Doughty. “Marco Barbieri has been an integral part of the Metal scene, music business, and community for many years. He has a vast knowledge of this business and specializes in nurturing bands to get the best out of them to achieve their goals. This is exactly what we were looking for, so when Marco heard our song ‘Defy the Blade’ that we put out on YouTube, he reached out to our singer wanting to hear more of our new EP. We were completely blown away by his interest. Once Marco heard the entire EP he offered us a contract under his new label M-Theory Audio. We were beside ourselves to say the least! We believe this is a partnership that will blossom into something very special, and are very much looking forward to working with M-theory Audio and Marco in the upcoming year 2017.”

Produced by Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Exodus, Testament) at Trident Studios in Martinez, CA and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Sepultura, Halford, Faith No More) in Los Angeles, the five songs sound large and impactful capturing CULTURAL WARFARE perfectly. Awesome cover art by Stone Design brings the band’s concept of Future Kill to life perfectly. The EP is set for a January 27threlease date on M-Theory Audio, via CD and digital distribution. Preorder copies now at the M-Theory shop for the special price of $5 here.
