OBITUARY – “Ten Thousand Ways To Die” CD Review

For over 30 years now the Tardy Brothers (John and Donald) have been bringing their low end tones of Death Metal to the masses and in their latest release Ten Thousand Ways to Die they do not disappoint.
What makes Ten Thousand Ways To Die unique is that it starts off with a couple new studio tracks followed by what most would consider a live greatest hits album with songs recorded from their last U.S. tour.

https://soundcloud.com/relapserecords/05-obituary-visions-in-my-head-live-baltimore-soundstage-baltimore

“Loathe” is the first track off the album and to me it has an old school “Redneck Stomp” feel to it. Slow, powerful and heavy. This new track really encompasses all we have come to expect from Obituary.

The next song on the album is the title track “Ten Thousand Ways to Die”. This track is vintage Obituary in my opinion. All the signatures of Obituary are there, vocals, drum sounds, guitar tones and a really cool guitar solo segment towards the end of the track which I didn’t expect but was pleasantly surprised by.

Generally speaking I haven’t always been the biggest fan of live albums, I tend to lean more towards the quality of a studio album and live records tend to miss the “cleanliness” which I enjoy in my music. With that said, it is hard to not love this album. With live tracks like “Chopped In Half”, “Bloodsoaked”, “Don’t Care” and of course my personal “Slowly We Rot” I can definitely overlook any imperfections the live recording process may have added to this record, and trust me there aren’t very many.

This album is a good example of why this band from Tampa, Florida has been around for as long as they have been. Obituary is consistent, you know what you’re going to get when you buy their music or go see them live. Any true metalhead should own this record, Ten Thousand Ways To Die is heavy, groovy and there isn’t any bullshit in it. The way metal should be!

Tracks:
Loathe
The Thousand Ways To Die
Redneck Stomp (Live-The Mayan-Los Angeles)
Centuries OF Lies (Live-The Masquerade-Atlanta)
Visions In My Head (Live-Baltimore Soundstage-Baltimore)
Intoxicated (Live-Revolution Center-Boise)
Bloodsoaked (Live-Irving Plaza-New York)
Dying (Live-Metro-Chicago)
Find The Arise (Live-Opera House-Toronto)

Motograter Sign With Megadeth Bassist’s EMP Label Group

Motograter have signed to EMP LABEL GROUP, who will release Desolation, the bands highly-anticipated sophomore album, produced by Ahrue Luster (Ill Nino/Ex-Machine Head) and mixed by Joshua Wickman (Within the Ruins, KING 810). The album was engineered by Luster, Wickman, and Jon Berrier, and recorded at Illustrious Productions, Dreadcore Productions, and BlackPlate Productions.
Art for DESOLATION was created by “Mister Sam” Shearon, who has created covers for comic books and graphic novels including Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER, Judge Dredd, The X-Files, Mars Attacks, KISS, and Clive Barker’s Books of Blood as well as artwork for some of the biggest names in rock music, such as Godhead, Ministry, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, Powerman 5000, Biohazard, American Head Charge, Rammstein, Fear Factory and Kill Devil Hill.

“I was actually in (the late) Steve Richards (No Name Records) office the DAY he signed Motograter. And he was SO excited, going on and on about this amazing new band he just signed, that made their own instrument (The Motograter) etc.. Steve was such a cool and infectious guy, and brought such an amazing energy to everything he did, and to this day, that stuck with me. And now to be able to come back full circle and put out Desolation on EMP, all these years later, and kinda continue that legacy with the current lineup, is really an amazing middle to the story. These guys have worked SO hard for so long, and it is an honor to sign a band that works as hard as MOTO does. Motograter, literally, should be the blueprint any hard touring independent band should follow.”

Prog Metal Tactus New Album ‘Bending Light Streaming Full Album

Fredericton, New Brunswick five piece progressive metal band TACTUS are proud to unleash their debut full length ‘Bending Light’ out now as of October 7th. The album features ten outer limit prog tracks produced by the band with mixing and mastering by Jamie King (Between The Buried In Me, Paradise Lost, Scale The Summit) to follow their previously released EPs ‘ins(T)rumental’ (2015) and ‘T’ (2014) plus singles ‘Enigma’ and their metal cover of The Police’s ‘Roxanne’.

The album is available for order at the following links.

Formed in 2011 as a jam project by three fellow music students, the group has gone on to release several singles and EPs independently, while having the opportunity to share the stage with great metal acts like Protest the Hero, Intervals, Black Crown Initiate, and Mandroid Echostar. The group pride themselves on their infusion of multiple musical styles into hard-hitting riffs, epic choruses, and technically intense passages. Soaring melodies, guttural growls, and destructive breakdowns flow into soft, slow, and pensive segments of jazz and rock. Their compositional method, where songs are conceived, written, transcribed, and edited before they are ever learned or rehearsed, adds a level of refinement and fluidity not always found in heavier music. The band do almost all of their engineering work themselves, but have also worked with several talented producers. Their first EP T (June 2014), comprised of four previously released singles and one new song, featured the mixing and mastering handiwork of Gino Bambino (Novallo) and Justin Hill (SikTh). Their single Resurface (December 2014) was handled by George Lever (Burials).

Take Me Home also supports local animal charities. Come by the booth to help out our furry friends by buying a shirt, signed merchandise, and entering a raffle. Danny Wimmer, Founder, DWP, said, “DWP is proud to support various charities, giving them a national platform to promote their messages. We are particularly fond of Take Me Home, which advocates for animal adoption. I hope everyone stops by their booth and supports their fundraising efforts to help animals in need.” For more information, please visit: www.takemehome.tv.

Montreal Prog Metal Powerhouse Fractal Cypher Premiere New Video ‘Imminent Extinction’

Recently unleashing their debut album ‘The Human Paradox’ produced by Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis) on September 7th, Montreal prog metallers FRACTAL CYPHER have teamed with Gear Gods for the exclusive premiere of their music video’Imminent Extinction’.

“‘Imminent Extinction’ clearly reflects the death metal influences of the band. This one is a good blend of heaviness and catchy melodies, definitely one of the most brutal and technical songs of the album. Play it loud and bang your head hard!” comments the band.

The Human Paradox’ features 9 songs, each hand picked and strategically chosen to best represent the living, breathing entity that is FRACTAL CYPHER. The band exists to captivate audiences with progressive instrumentals that cut through the mesmerizing vocals yet somehow evolving; each listen provides a new perspective. Straight out of the heart of Canada’s metal scene, these Montreal metallers constantly shift their compositions with seamless transitions and theatrical interludes to keep audiences on their toes. Since 2014, ex-Far From Reality members Simon Lavoie (vocals), Ludovick Daoust (keyboard), and Vincent Bruneau (guitar) have dedicated themselves to FRACTAL CYPHER.

The powerful quintet is just as versatile in their music as they are in their musical interests, darting between djent, death metal, and classic rock. Each song acts of their own volition almost taking control of the members and shaping a personality and energy not unlike a living entity. Ludovick is at the helm of songwriting, calculating and unlocking each melody and becoming the voice for each piece.

To listen to the full album stream of ‘The Human Paradox’, please visit the following link: https://fractalcypher.bandcamp.com/album/the-human-paradox-2

The album is available on iTunes, Google Play and Spotify.
