We recently met up with Ben Bruce, guitarist and founding member of metalcore giants Asking Alexandria, to talk about his journey from Dubai to England, the evolution of the band, their new album, and the perks—and pitfalls—of being a buzzworthy name in metal. Here’s the full interview:
Leaving Dubai: A Fresh Start
Q: What made you leave Dubai?
Ben: I left when I was about 18. I’m not originally from there—I went to school in Dubai, but once that was done, I moved back to England, where I’m from.
Music on Repeat
Q: What was the last thing you listened to by choice?
Ben: Probably A Day to Remember’s new album Homesick. It’s a killer album.
Books on the Road
Q: Do you read much?
Ben: I just started The Dirt, the Mötley Crüe biography. When you’re on long drives, it’s a great way to pass time.
Q: You don’t get carsick?
Ben: I used to as a kid, but I grew out of it. Now I’m good.
Old Band, New Name Confusion
Q: There’s been confusion between the “old” Asking Alexandria and the new one. What’s the story?
Ben: Back in Dubai, I was in a band called End of Reason. We briefly renamed it Asking Alexandria, but it didn’t go anywhere. When I moved to the UK, I kept the name for the new band. Same name, totally different band.
Internet Rumors and Clarifications
Q: Has the confusion cleared up now?
Ben: Yeah, it used to be a hassle correcting people constantly, but not anymore. As we’ve grown, the truth’s gotten out.
Album Leaks and Free Downloads
Q: Your album is all over the Internet for free. Upside?
Ben: More people are hearing it and showing up at shows. It sucks it’s free, but I’d rather people listen than not at all.
Q: How many people do you think actually buy it after downloading?
Ben: Maybe 4 out of 10. Not ideal odds, but better than zero.
Rising Stars in Metal
Q: Some say you’re the “blowing-up band” of the moment. Thoughts?
Ben: I’ve heard that, and it’s surreal. We’re just taking it day by day and keeping our heads down.
Q: Noticed any perks from the buzz?
Ben: Yeah, more endorsements, more tour invites. It’s all starting to pay off.
Working with Joey Sturgis
Q: How did you choose producer Joey Sturgis?
Ben: We love his work. He’s done a ton of great mixes, and it felt natural to work with someone who gets our genre. Craig at Rise Records connected us.
Q: Favorite album Joey’s worked on?
Ben: Probably The Devil Wears Prada’s latest. As a mix, it’s his best yet.
Culture Shock: Indiana vs. England
Q: What was Indiana like compared to London or York?
Ben: Like comparing a steak to a carrot. Totally different. Flat, hot, full of cornfields and bugs. We had ants in the RV—biting ants. Huge ones.
Swearing, Stickers, and Santa
Q: Do you know how many times “fuck” is said on the album?
Ben: No clue—probably a lot. I’ve never counted. Maybe someone will for Wikipedia.
Q: No parental advisory sticker. Intentional?
Ben: It just never came up. These days, unless it’s super extreme, no one bothers.
Wild Encounters & Tour Gifts
Q: Any weird animal attacks or celebrity run-ins?
Ben: No four-legged attacks—other than our vocalist. But we did have the lead actress from Twilight at one of our shows. That was cool.
Q: What gifts can get a fan on your guest list?
Ben: Kate Beckinsale. Or Kate Hudson. Also: cigarettes, money, beer, food, cars—whatever works.
Christmas Wishes & SuperLotto Numbers
Q: What do you want for Christmas?
Ben: A bigger penis? A platinum album? Nah—I want to sit on Santa’s lap.
Q: Pick 5 numbers between 1–60 and 1 number between 1–50.
Ben: Alright—5, 12, 24, 8, 56. Mega number: 21. Good luck!
Final Thoughts
Ben Bruce isn’t just a talented guitarist—he’s down-to-earth, funny, and unfiltered. Whether he’s battling ants in an RV or fielding confusion about the band’s origin, he’s staying grounded and focused on the music.
