Black metal songstress and tour-de-force, Hulder aka Marliese Beeuwsaert, will start her US tour at Roseville’s Goldfield Trading Post. After releasing a handful of EPs, singles, demos and full-lengths, the long awaited ‘Verses In Oath’ was just released via 20 Buck Spin records on February 9th. Ending on March 18th in Colorado, the run of live dates finds this wholly obnoxious four-band bill visiting many of the important major markets with some less obvious tour stops also on the menu.
Shrouded in mystique that can be best compared to early Bathory, Hulder’s leader purposely keeps her identity and visibility largely hidden from view. Unlike the aforementioned, Hulder is a potent live group that actively tours. Fans of mysterious one-man acts like Xasthur and even Leviathan will appreciate her latest work, which also has other myriad influences ranging from Nordic black metal greats like Satyricon and Enslaved to lesser known acts such as Tsjuder.
Originally recorded in the Northwest with drums tracked elsewhere, standout offerings from ‘Verses In Oath include (but are most certainly not limited to) the title track, the epic “Cast Into The Well Of Remembrance,” “Vessel Of Suffering,” showcase a 29-year-old songwriter maturing well beyond her age. Without sounding dated nor derivative, Hulder’s latest is a triumph for the black metal genre and, more importantly, a cap in the feather of an artist unafraid to produce music contrary to current output from other groups in her immediate and outer-lying circle.

Already the darlings of Decibel Magazine, the latest record already garnered a 9/10 rating as well as gracing the cover of said publication twice. To directly quote from Hulder’s latest album review, “There is a newfound poise, a resolute force, at the heart of Hulder’’s new LP; it is equally nostalgic and forward-searching. The way this evolving phenom conveys emotion – from rage to sorrow – and does so through time-tested combinations of throttling raw riffs, blast-surges, mournful keys, and inhuman growls while still sounding singular, is a truly striking achievement.”
And while Goldfield Trading Post’s location – nestled in the heart of a largely yuppie epicenter in Old Roseville – may seem like the most unlikely of locations to wage sonic warfare, it couldn’t be a more perfect locale for a black metal gathering and community upheaval. Expect a swathe of black t-shirts, a sea of introverted black metal fans who rarely come out en masse, and a night of some of the heaviest and forward-thinking metal starting with opening act Necrofier through to headliner Hulder.

Decibel Tour presents Hulder headlining a night of extreme metal at Goldfield Trading Post located at 238 Vernon Street in Roseville. Also on this nauseatingly heavy bill is Devil Master (Philadelphia, PA), Worm (Florida via Quebec, Canada), and Necrofier (Houston, TX). Doors open at 6:30pm and the show kicks off promptly at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $25 here at goldfieldtradingpost.com. All ages are welcome.
