ANVIL – “One And Only” (AFM Records)

On July 19th, the Canadian band Anvil will release their new album “One And Only” on AFM Records. Over their career they have been stated by many authorities on the subject and have voted them to be one of the most influential heavy metal acts ever. Inspiring internationally renowned metal bands like Slayer, Metallica, and maybe even Motorhead at times. I honestly have to admit that before this was given to me, I had never listened to Anvil, or if I had, I didn’t know it.

As soon as I watched the video for “Feed Your Fantasy“, I knew I had to listen to their entire catalog, and not just because I’m writing this article. I have now come to the understanding that this band originally formed in Toronto, Canada, with it’s two masterminds, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner (no, not the director) and bassist Chris Robertson, and this record lives up to the name of the album because it seems as though they just went back into the studio like only one of a kind can do and bring something new to the contemporary metal scene, just as impressive as they did at the beginning of their career.

Wondering, “How can they still do this?”. Very easily with the straightforward metal riffs, hooks, and an awesome rhythm section that seemingly effortlessly great passion and celebration of the love of what they do provide “Lips” everything he needs to with great passion, still place them on the mantle they’ve held for quite some time now. They’ve started their U.S. tour on July 10th in Battleboro, VT, and will continue through Cleveland, OH. on August 25th.

I personally can’t wait to see them at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco on August 11th and sit down with one of them and discuss the album and their illustrious careers. Speaking of the album, My favorites are track three, Fight for Your Rights,” which is one of those songs that make you just want to start thrashing around, and track four, “Heartbroken,” which is bluesy and definitely has some early Black Sabbath influence to it that you can hear from the first note to the last.

Essentially, what I’m trying to get across to you is that they’re still putting out a metal sound with three members that some bands with five members have trouble accomplishing I recommend that you get this one and definitely hit them up on the ongoing tour. You can pre-order here.
