Concert Photo Review: SEBASTIAN BACH, KURT DEIMER and NOVA SUTRO @ Goldfield – Roseville, CA

On a very rainy November 20, Sebastian Bach packed Goldfield in Roseville, California for his Child Within the Man Tour. Fans arrived early and the entry line was long. Excitement filled the air, and everyone anxiously awaited the man they have been listening to for decades—including me. I remember getting ready for school blasting Youth Gone Wild and 18 and Life and being slightly older falling in love with the sound of Sebastian Bach singing Quicksand Jesus. But, like everyone else, I would have to wait a couple of hours to hear the voice of my youth.

Local openers Nova Sutro kicked off the evening with their high-energy hard rock blend for which they are known. Shortly thereafter, Kurt Deimer, actor and vocalist, warmed the crowd with his talented group of musicians and his inspiring lyrics that urge people to unite to fight for change against tyrants who oppress and use us to enrich themselves while they pollute our home and leave the poor and sick to suffer. It was Kurt’s last night supporting Sebastian Bach, and he performed a refreshing set of hard-hitting rock music that entertained the crowd and fitted nicely with the lineup.

By the time Sebastian Bach was to perform, the venue was full, and people packed like sardines on a Wednesday. He joked that his friends even told him that there is not much that gets them out mid-week to stand for hours…but he did draw a crowd to celebrate 35 years of Skid Row and Sebastian Bach’s solo material, as well. I could not access the sound booth, so I fought the surging crowd to try to get within range to photograph my childhood idol over what seemed like a tall audience compared to me. The crowd erupted as he started with What Do I Got to Lose off his latest album. It was a family affair with his son on drums! He performed a beautiful mix of his solo songs including the very personal Everybody Bleeds and classic Skid Row songs such as Slave to the Grind, Here I Am, Sweet Little Sister, 18 and Life, Piece of Me, Monkey Business, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild and others. He performed an 18-song set with the crowd singing 18 and Life from memory. Astonishingly, he sounded like no time had passed since the 80’s—holding notes to emphasize his voice is still strong and stunning after 35 years. Do not pass up a chance to see Sebastian Bach again; I am so glad that I did not!
