Mondavi Center has been producing some of the finest events in the region and last Friday’s conversation and screening of Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense’ masterpiece was certainly no exception to the rule. Considered by many audiophiles to be the greatest concert film of all time, Stop Making Sense, directed by Jonathan Demme, was recorded over three nights at The Pantages Theatre in Hollywood back in December 1983.

The newly revamped concert film came out late 2023, but has been making the rounds both in theaters and performing arts centers to capacity crowds. Residencies included major markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London. The show even sold out a whopping 25 theaters upon release and consequently became IMAX’s highest-grossing live event.
For the uninitiated, multi-instrumentalist Jerry Harrison has been busy playing with his Remain In Light project with Talking Heads live alumni, Adrian Belew, and most recently was able to partner up with filmhouse A24 to clean up some of the old master tapes.
And for those that have never seen the live concert video in any iteration, let’s just say it varies greatly from the typical releases that have flooded the market. While the band’s career sadly ended after their 8th album, ‘Naked,’ it’s wholly obvious the band still had gas in their tank when they actually broke up for good.
Talking Heads pretty much ruled the roost during the ’80s and the songs included on their live concert video are nothing short of spectacular. The live film starts off with band leader David Byrne playing one of the bands most popular tunes , “Psycho Killer,” and then slowly builds a set / backdrop and adds new players as the show goes on.

And although the visuals are plain, the music is anything but. With a set list that showcases some of the band’s biggest hits and fan favorites including (but not limited to) “Burning Down The House,” “Heaven,” “Once In A Lifetime,” “Life During Wartime,” and Al Green’s “Take Me To The River,” this is one concert nobody should miss.
