This weekend, Exodus will headline it’s first Bay Area club shows since late 2013 when the band takes over the Chapel in San Francisco’s Mission District for two nights. The band is promising a special event for fans with plans to film the Exodus as they perform some rarely heard songs alongside classic hits in addition to inviting some past members onstage for guest appearances. CBS SF spoke to Holt earlier this week about the two-night SF residency as well as his plans with both Exodus and Slayer.
CBS SF: When we talked a few years ago prior to Blood In Blood Outbeing recorded, you mentioned having gotten the “Pink Floyd or Rush of thrash” out of your system as far as Exhibit A and Exhibit B leaning towards more complex song structures. Do you see the new album sticking to the more straight forward type of tunes that were on Blood In Blood Out?
Gary Holt: You know, it’s hard to say. Of the stuff I’ve written so far, I think the songs are shorter, but I think they’re also at the same time more progressive than the last album. It’s a little outside the box. It’s really super crushing, but I think people will be surprised.
It’s an Exodus album, but as of now, the stuff Tom and I have been putting together is a bit different. It’s got those subtle changes that make for a departure, but it will still stay true to the core of the band’s sound.
CBS SF: Had Exodus played or toured with Maiden before?
Gary Holt: No, Maiden has been out on tour with Ghost, but I think they did this a couple of years ago as well. When they played the Southern California show they added some bands and made it kind of like a mini festival because that amphitheater down there is massive. I guess you’d call it a little one-day Maiden fest. It was a pretty epic show. It just had some epic technical failures.

Tom Maxwell (born June 25, 1968) is a modern metal/rock guitarist in the bands Knives Out! and Hellyeah. Previous bands include Nothingface in which he was a founding member and main song-writer with Bill Gaal. After Nothingface he was involved in a band with Skrape vocalist Billy Keeton. In the 1980s he was in thrash metal band Have Mercy. His style of playing and writing relies more on grooves and hooks rather than shredding and fast soloing. Maxwell hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and got his first guitar, a 1969 Gibson Les Paul, when he was eight years old. According to Maxwell, he still owns it. He is currently endorsing on Dean Guitars website.
(New York, NY) – Hard rock legends BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, fronted by guitar icon ZAKK WYLDE, have announced the Unblackened tour. Originally performed as a one night only concert at Club Nokia in Los Angeles for a live CD/DVD release two years ago, the show will now make its way across the U.S. The show will feature intimate versions of some of the band’s most popular songs, as well as songs from Wylde’s best-selling solo album Book of Shadows & his Southern rock band Pride & Glory. “I always wanted to take Unblackened on the road, we just didn’t have the time until now,” said Wylde. “You can take a song that you’ve played thousands of times and rearrange it, and all of a sudden it’s something totally fresh. The attitude of the songs doesn’t change when we play them acoustically–the tunes are gritty regardless.”

Thrash legends Exodus visited the Scion AV All Purpose Show to talk with host Prince Paul. In San Diego “to jam and massacre some legendary songs” at the after-party for Kirk Von Hammet’s Fear FestEvil, Exodus took the time to discuss lineup changes, moving forward and their upcoming Blood in Blood Out. Torch-carrying guitarist Gary Holt, drummer and co-founder Tom Hunting (now on his third stint with the band) and recently returned vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza (also on third trip) sit in on this discussion. As to how they came to the lineup they’ve assembled for Blood In Blood Out, Hunting says, “We were at an impasse, and this album number 10, so it had to be special.”
“Aggressive and in-your-face and the fastest album we’ve ever done. I was able to concentrate on leads and I played some of the best stuff I ever have.”
