Interview: Riffs, Ribs, and the Road Ahead with Ken Bedene of ABORTED

We caught up with Ken Bedene, drummer of Aborted, outside of the Oakland Metro during a short stop in California. Fresh off tour and gearing up for a busy summer in Europe, Ken gave us the scoop on life with Aborted, writing across continents, and what fans can expect from the band in the coming months.

Capital Chaos TV:
Capital Chaos TV here, and we’re live tonight at the Oakland Metro in Oakland, California, with Ken from Aborted. How you doing, Ken?

Ken Bedene:
Doing great! Just got off tour and, somehow, I’m in California. I’m only here for a day, checking out some other good bands, so it should be cool.

Capital Chaos TV:
Awesome! So maybe talk a little about the tour. I saw you guys a couple of weeks back—there were some great bands on that bill. Fit for an Autopsy, and who else?

Ken Bedene:
Yeah, it was Fit for an Autopsy, Dark Sermon, and Archspire. It was a really good tour—great turnouts at pretty much every show. Just a solid lineup of bands, and touring with everyone was a lot of fun. It was also cool because it was one of our first headlining or co-headlining tours in the States in a while. It was nice to see people coming out and supporting us.

Capital Chaos TV:
Yeah, the San Francisco show had a great crowd. That was a fun night.

Ken Bedene:
Totally. That was actually the day after Sven hurt his rib, so he had some trouble singing that night. But he still gave it his all—was having a good time, stirring up drinks on stage, and the songs still sounded great. It was pretty funny and impressive at the same time.

Capital Chaos TV:
So what’s next for you guys? Any new music in the works? And how does that all come together, considering you guys are spread out geographically?

Ken Bedene:
Right, yeah. So, tomorrow morning I’m flying to Europe, and we’re jumping into festival season—Graspop and other big ones, which should be awesome. While we’re there, we’ll also be working on demos and pre-production for a new EP that’s coming out. We’ll probably do some cool pre-orders and stuff like we usually do.

Capital Chaos TV:
You’ve got a lot of experience with this process by now, right?

Ken Bedene:
Yeah, definitely. I’ve been in the band for about four or five years now. Every summer, Aborted hits the European festival circuit hard. There are just so many festivals over there—it’s literally a full summer run. You don’t just play one or two shows; it’s a whole tour of festivals.

Capital Chaos TV:
Makes the trip more worthwhile, too—especially since you’re not just hopping over for a few gigs.

Ken Bedene:
Exactly. I have to fly over there because I’m the only one in the band who lives in the U.S. Our singer lives in Belgium, and the rest of the guys are in the Netherlands. So yeah, it’s a long trip for me, but when there’s a lot going on, I usually stay over there for the summer. That way, we get a chance to actually write together in person, which is rare.

Capital Chaos TV:
So how do you guys usually write when you’re apart?

Ken Bedene:
Everyone plays guitar except for Sven, so we all just demo out our own ideas, then bring them to the table and build from there. Sven always brings in great ideas, too—he’s really the core sound of Aborted, being the original guy and all.

Capital Chaos TV:
I thought you guys played DNA Lounge last month too?

Ken Bedene:
Yeah, we did. That was a good time.

Capital Chaos TV:
So after the summer and the festivals, what’s next for you guys?

Ken Bedene:
After festival season, we’ll take some time to focus on the new album. Once that drops, we’ll be back out touring again—doing the full cycle. I really hope we can do more tours in the States. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but we’re working on it.

Capital Chaos TV:
Are you hoping to release the new album this year, or will it be early next year?

Ken Bedene:
It’ll definitely be next year—hopefully early 2016. We’ll drop the EP first, probably by the end of this year or close to it, and then the full-length will follow.

Capital Chaos TV:
And where’s home base for you?

Ken Bedene:
I live in Chico, California.

Capital Chaos TV:
Nice. Anything else outside of Aborted you want to talk about? Gear endorsements or anything like that?
