Conversations at the Q! Interviews with The Sawyer Family and Beefcake The Mighty of Gwar.

I had an awesome time at this years 7th annual GwarBq, I really enjoyed being there and hanging out with everyone. I was lucky enough to snag an interview with some of the bands. I got to interview a really cool up and coming band The Sawyer Family and then I got to interview Beefcake the Mighty (Jamison Land) of Gwar

I had the pleasure of interviewing an up and coming band that has been around for awhile. They are The Sawyer Family and they have dubbed themselves as a stoner rock band from the 7th dimension. I gave them a listen and they definitely have a great vibe and music definitely gives a sense of chill that I wouldn’t mind taking a few tokes to while listening to. I had a a full interview with the whole Sawyer Family but sadly along with some personal pictures and my video of the Gwar interview. Luckily I was able to reconnect with Judge Jarod Sawyer and have a second interview.

Sawyer Interview

Me: Thanks again for the opportunity!! So is this your first Q? How does it feel to be playing the Q?

Judge /Guitar and Vocals : We played the Brutal Brunch last year in the park across from Gwar Bar, but this is our first main event. It was great to be able to play on the Slaughterama Stage this year among such esteemed company. I just wish I could have seen all of the bands, but there’s only so much time in one day. We had a blast.

Me: .what are your influences?

Judge: We’re all over the map on this one. When we’re writing, we don’t really try to emulate any style. Zack could write a melody based on classical music, then I’ll add reverbed out, sixties style soul rhythm guitar and Dennis will throw in some funky Prince licks or a shredding Slash solo. Kyle can do whatever he wants, beating the shit out of those drums. And then the song will evolve anyway into something entirely different.

We listen to everything. One day, it could be Slayer, then The Stones, then Queens of the Stone Age, The Stooges, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Black Sabbath. Really anything. I don’t think any musician should get trapped in a genre, though it’s sometimes an easy trap to fall into.

Me: Any new project in the works?

Judge: We’re currently writing new material and preparing for our 2nd European tour, TBA. We hope to be ready for the studio again within a year.

We have plenty of ideas which may or may not come to fruition. New merch ideas, a possible instrumental seven inch… a movie about Steven Seagal…

Me: If you plan to tour will you be hitting Sacramento and what can people expect from your shows??

Judge: We make it through Sacramento from time to time. Being from the West Coast, that’s an easy stop, but with Winter on its way, the mountains out here are always a wild card.

As for what to expect from the shows, we’re not too big on theatrics. We just want to create the atmosphere with the sound, keep the energy level up and be as tight as possible.

Me: Bonus round Any cool GwarBq stories from the past? Have you met Oderus?

Judge: Maybe we met Oderus in a dream. Perhaps not..

Thanks again to Judge Sawyer and the Sawyer Family for an awesome opportunity to get to know them and their music! Please check them out on facebook!

Now to the part everyone was waiting for! It was a short interview and we didn’t have much time. I was so nervous as I was ushered in to a busy press room where Beefcake and other members of Gwar were being interviewed all at once. In the humid heat of Richmond Va regular humans were melting away so I knew that Beefcake was boiling in his own juices in his heavy armor. I was told to make it quick so I did my best. I knew to be prepared for fun rude remarks and a verbal manhandling but I didn’t quite get that.

Me: “Hi Im Nikki Knight from Capital Chaos TV and Im here with Beefcake the Mighty of Gwar! Im so excited to meet you!!”

Beefcake: “Hi whatever”

Me: So have you heard any new news from your home Planet Cholesterol?

Beefcake: “No! We are stuck where have you been??”

Me: “I know. Just thought you guys got free during Lust in Space so maybe you might again. So how many hopeless Bohab lives are you estimating to kill this Q?”

Beefcake: “17”

Me: “So you guys came out with Arctic Snow Vodka, so how do you like it?”

Beefcake: “Straight…”

Me: “There are many people who look up to you and want to kill and slay onstage. Is there any advice you would like to give them?”

Beefcake: “I really don’t care its about me.”

Me: Thanks so much for your time …
