Dirkschneider Restless And Wild In San Francisco

On a Saturday night in San Francisco while drought stricken Northern California was in the midst of torrential downpour and the practically the whole world was up in arms over day two of USA ruled by what many believe to be an new fascist regime, legendary former Accept vocalist Udo Dirkschneider brought his Back To The Roots world tour to Slims.

I arrived a few hours early to doors and found free parking directly across the street from the bands tour bus, the night was off to a good start. I could hear the band soundcheck with one of my many Accept favorites London Leatherboys as i read the note on the door “At The Artists Request Please No Moshing. It took me back to 1985 to the Metal Heart Tour where my friends and I attempted to start a pit when they played the Hollywood Palladium with Rough Cutt.

To a packed house of mostly middle aged geezers the Dirkschneider band raged on to the stage with Starlight off the Breaker album and it was non stop heavy metal heaven with 24 songs clocking in at almost two hours with classics such as Neon Nights, Flash Rockin Man, Midnight Mover. Pure bliss.

At 63 years of age Udo Dirkscheneider’s voice was as strong as ever never waning or dropping out of key, we all sort of expect that form our heroes as they get older but not tonight, up to the limit indeed. Princess Of The Dawn took a strange turn from the original and half way through the set with Winterdreams the pace was brought down a bit. It was nice to hear a ballad to change the dynamics before the head banging frenzy reignited with a shortned Restless and Wild, Son A Of A Bitch and more… With Udo’s son Sven now on drums and dynamic duo of youngsters on guitars there was unlimited amount of energy and spark that brought us all back to the glory of youth.

For those of us in attendance it was a night of heavy metal heaven and i strongly recommend headbangers worldwide to be ahead of the pack, but a ticket and get ready for a night you wont soon forget.
