Shallow Ground guitarist/vocalist Keith Letourneau Interrogated

Hailing from Meriden Connecticut, Shallow Ground is a thrash metal band originally formed back in the mid-nineties. Comprised of like-minded individuals with a passion for playing loud, aggressive, brain-rattling music, the band is aiming to spread its brand of thrash metal to the masses. After taking a few years off, the band came back together in 2009 to record their self-titled EP. In 2013, they signed a deal with Killer Metal Records (KMR) from Germany and released their full-length debut cd, The End Of Everything.
In 2015 they went back into the studio to record their 2nd CD on KMR. This time, they recorded at Dexter’s Lab with Nick Rage of Toxic Holocaust and Jasta fame, who recorded and produced this CD entitled Embrace the Fury, which came out Nov 13th 2015.

In early 2016, Shallow Ground re-signed to KMR. 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the band with plans for new music, big shows, and an all-out assault on the ears of old-school thrash metal fans everywhere!

How did you first get in to music? Who turned you onto rock/metal?

Black Sabbath and Kiss got me started.

How did you become a guitarist and vocalist? Are you proficient in any other instruments?

Oh god no, lol. I’m a guitar player that happens to be the vocalist. That’s all I am.

What was the local scene in Connecticut like in the beginning, was there a particular band you aspired to be like, favorite local bands back then, favorite local bands now?

Connecticut has a good metal crowd from hard core to death metal its all here. Favorite local bands from way back are Sonick Plague & CFI, 2 of my favorite Connecticut thrash bands. Sonick plague is still at it an just as good as ever. There are a ton of bands here. If I must single one out at the moment, it would be Crossing Rubicon they have that 80’s metal feel.

Has there been times when drugs and alcohol were beneficial to the band?

LOL, not really. It has caused nothing but trouble. And I can’t deal with drug addiction In a band I’m playing in.

How would you best describe your sound?

Thrash Harvey balls out Thrash

Is doing ticket pre-sales the same thing as pay to play?

Sometimes when you have to sell 50 tix to a gig for the touring band to get paid and you get $1 a tix at 25 a tix sucks.

What was the first music you bought and what have you bought more than once?

Kiss Alive and Alive 2. I wore them out and I have bought them 3-4 times. SOD and others from albums then to cassette then cd. Not I tunes

DIY forever or signing with a label at first opportunity?

We are signed to Killer Metal Records (KMR) from Germany.

Whats the biggest show you have played so far and do you still get nervous before a gig?

I cant remember the biggest crowd. But I get nervous before every show.

Is commercial rock radio dead?

For me it is all classic rock same song same time of day.

Favorite songs on the new as yet to be finished album and why?

Once Again off Embrace The Fury is my favorite off last cd. from the upcoming new one will I think it will be “3lbs Down”.

Out of all your songs which one touches you the most when you perform it?

Black Rose. just a fun tune to play.

Are there any political or social issues hidden in Shallow Ground songs?

Hidden no, it’s in plain site to see, “Class Warfare”. The name says it all.

What was the process of putting the songs in order?

Coin flip.

What endorsements do you have and what endorsements do you still want?

For amps – Randall. For guitars I have Strictly 7 guitars, which are awesome, awesome guitars. Just killer.

Bands you would love to tour with and musician or artist you would like to meet and interrogate?

Overkill, Slayer, Exodus and any quality thrash band. band I would love to tour with, not really as I have meet a bunch of them and played on the same bill as them.

Song to be played at your funeral and 3 albums to take to your grave?

The music when Darth Vader comes out of the shuttle in the original Star Wars movie. I want that blaring as they push my casket down the isle.
