Venice, CA – the birthplace of SKATEPUNK and the band that catapulted the movement worldwide the SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. Their debut self titled album featured the punk hits I Saw Your Mommy…, Suicidal Failure, Possessed and Institutionalized, the first hardcore punk hit to receive substantial airplay on the still growing all music channel MTV. Their 1987 sophomore album JOIN THE ARMY, although didn’t live up to the expectations of its predecessor, did spawn the hits War Inside My Head, Possessed to Skate, and Born To Be Cyco. Through the years the lineup of the SUICIDAL TENDENCIES continues to evolve but one truth stands – There’s no SUI… without Loui!
After leaving SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, Mayorga bounced around Los Angeles working with Kidd Frost, Norwood Fisher (FISHBONE), Aaron Mcfadden, Lily Hayden, toured as a stand in bass player for Cypress Hill, and founded the ska-punk-rasta-funk band HORNY Toad! which is best known for the modest hit SHIVER.
“While on the road with H.R. of BAD BRAINS, club promoters who remembered me from the 80s kept asking me where I’ve been and why I wasn’t touring with my own band and it suddenly hit me. I co-wrote/wrote or composed some pretty big hits, it would be nice to play them live again,” adds Mayorga and upon returning to Los Angeles Mayorga formed LUICIDAL.
Teaming up with drummer R.J. Herrera (Suicidal Tendencies 1983 – 1990), Marty Ramirez (guitar) and singer Mando Ochoa (Sick Sense), the lineup was complete. A U.S., Canada and European tour followed and an album of original material debuted on DC JAM Records in 2014. Current line-up features Vince Sollecito on drums.
“Getting back on the road and hearing the stories from fans about the SUICIDAL shows they went to as kids and then meeting their kids and the next generation of Punk Rockers wearing LUICIDAL and SUICIDAL t-shirts and hats is a real trip,” adds Mayorga he continues with “Who would’ve thought that the songs I co-wrote 35 years ago would still be relevant today.”
For their sophomore release, produced by Mayorga, BORN IN VENICE (October 12th) on CLEOPATRA RECORDS, LUICIDAL is releasing 13 new tracks inspired by life in Venice, CA – BORN IN VENICE, politics – FUCK YOU, a pot head – PUNK CHIC, the early days of S.T. – S.T. POSSE, Loui leaving S.T. – ONE STEELE SOLDIER, death of a friend – Tears of a Psycho Clown, surfing – SURFIN TSUNAMI as well as INSTITUCIONALIZADO which Billboard Magazine proclaims to be an “Epic Spanish-Language Version of Suicidal Tendencies’ Institutionalized.
“When the idea of covering an ST song came up, the first singer I thought of was Ceci, and of course ‘Institutionalized’ was a sure thing. I wanted to keep the same spirit of the song but with the point of view from a young Hispanic female and in Spanish” says Mayorga, who first saw Ceci Bastida perform with the Mexican punk band Tijuana No! He adds “While in ST we always had a huge Latino fan base…the Latino punk rock scene has so much talent and if we can do our part in helping it grow, we will.”
