After making the drive down from Colfax, I pulled into The Rink Studios around 5:00 PM to scope out the venue ahead of a heavy night of Sacramento metal. Doors weren’t scheduled to open until 6:00 PM, so I headed over to the side entrance where a few early arrivers were already gathered.
Despite the triple-digit heat, the welcoming vibe was immediate. I was brought inside out of the sun, issued my press wristband, and introduced to James Carson, who gave me a personal tour of the facility. From a dedicated photo pit to elevated balcony angles, it was clear right away that the venue was built with media coverage in mind. Kevin’s hospitality set the tone for the rest of the evening, making it feel less like a routine assignment and more like an integration into a thriving local scene.
Sacra-Metal Fest 2026 brought together five of Northern California’s heaviest bands for a night that celebrated new music, the local metal scene, and the community that keeps it thriving. Hosted at The Rink Studios and presented by Sacrametal Records, Sacramento Maidens of Metal, and Metal Image Productions, the evening felt less like a typical concert and more like a gathering of friends who just happened to be playing some incredibly heavy music.
Eternal Terror wasted no time getting the room fired up. From the opening riffs, they hit with a level of intensity that immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. Their blend of aggressive guitars, driving rhythms, and confident stage presence made for a perfect opener, setting a high bar for the rest of the evening. The Rink Studios’ intimate layout helped every note land with extra force, and by the end of their set, the crowd was fully invested in what promised to be an unforgettable night.
Fresh off the release of their new album Black Dookie, Lysol Toast delivered exactly the kind of loud, unapologetic punk chaos fans were hoping for. Their performance was raw, energetic, and wonderfully unpredictable, embracing the spirit of a true album release celebration. The new songs fit naturally alongside older material, while the band’s loose, carefree attitude kept the atmosphere fun from start to finish. Before long, the floor had erupted into a sea of movement as fans celebrated right alongside them.
Parabellum once again demonstrated why they’ve become one of Sacramento’s most dependable live acts. Their performance balanced crushing heaviness with remarkable precision, every member locked into the groove from beginning to end. Whether delivering fan favorites or deeper cuts, the band’s chemistry never wavered. Watching from the balcony offered a unique perspective that showcased both their commanding stage presence and the crowd’s constant reaction below.
Their set also marked the maiden voyage of my new Insta360 camera. I handed it off to Vpictured Connor with one simple mission—capture the raw energy from inside the pit—and he absolutely delivered. The footage puts viewers right in the middle of the action, adding a whole new perspective to the experience and perfectly matching the intensity of Parabellum’s performance. Every song carried weight, making for another standout set from one of Sacramento’s premier metal bands.
Hate Primer shifted the night’s momentum into darker territory with a set built on massive riffs, punishing grooves, and relentless energy. Their sound filled the room with a thick, crushing wall of heaviness that contrasted perfectly with the earlier performances. Early in the set, the band encountered some unexpected technical difficulties with the sound system, but they handled the situation professionally, keeping their composure while the issues were resolved. Once everything was back on track, the vocals sliced cleanly through the mix while the rhythm section kept the audience locked into every breakdown. Their confidence never wavered, delivering each song with purpose and proving exactly why they’ve earned such a strong following in the local scene.
Closing out the night, Unprovoked delivered one of the festival’s most explosive performances. Riding the momentum of their new album Out of the Ashes, the band attacked every song with relentless intensity. The new material blended seamlessly with longtime fan favorites, showing both growth and consistency without losing the aggressive edge that defines them.
The audience responded immediately, creating nonstop energy from the first note until the final breakdown. One of the things that stood out most wasn’t just their performance on stage, but how approachable they remained throughout the night. Like many of the bands on the bill, they spent time talking with fans before and after their set, reinforcing the sense of community that made Sacra-Metal Fest feel so special.
Unfortunately, because of the earlier technical difficulties, Unprovoked had to trim their set slightly in order to comply with The Rink Studios’ strict 11:00 PM sound curfew. Even with the shortened set, they packed every minute with intensity, delivering a performance that felt far bigger than its runtime. They closed the evening on a high note, leaving the crowd buzzing long after the final note faded.
This marked my first visit to The Rink Studios, and it couldn’t have made a better first impression. Kevin Dunn put together one of the most photographer-friendly setups I’ve worked in, complete with a dedicated photo pit that allowed photographers to capture the action without disrupting the audience experience. The venue’s balcony also provided outstanding telephoto shooting angles, offering a completely different perspective of the performances below.
One of the night’s biggest highlights was seeing every band hanging out among the fans instead of disappearing backstage between sets. That accessibility created a welcoming atmosphere that made the entire event feel like one big celebration of Sacramento’s metal community.

Star Cannon of Sacramento Maidens of Metal kept the show moving as Master of Ceremonies, bringing enthusiasm and personality between every set.
If this year’s Sacra-Metal Fest is any indication of what’s ahead, The Rink Studios is quickly becoming one of Sacramento’s premier destinations for heavy music. I look forward to covering many more shows here in the future.
