From the feedback slowly filling your ears with sonic pleasure the boys from Down rip into the new track Blood Oath from their forthcoming release Volume V . Their first full length release in 19 years. If you love riffs this was the show to be at on this night. The band was tight and on point as if they’ve been playing together the last 20 years.
From the crunching opening riff of Lifer this near capacity crowd was in a frenzy. Pepper Kennan and Kirk Windstein riffs cut through the air like a cheese grater across your face. An orgasm for the ears. Phil Anselmo looking and sounding like the Phil we remember. The metal world is a better place with a sober and healthy Phil. The setlist was mainly pulled from the brilliant NOLA album. Cutting through killer tunes Losing All , Rehab and Temptations Wings towards the end of the set the momentum was at a peak. The most memorable moment for me personally was the crowd engagement during Stone the Crow.
Hearing a crowd singing along with the words “I never died before “ was emotionally charged. While these boys are older and maybe not able to abuse their bodies on stage as they once did , it certainly didn’t take away from the intensity and pure brilliance of this night. Ending with the crushing Bury Me In Smoke was the perfect way to end this night on a high. All hail DOWN.
