There are easier ways to describe IATT than “a psychological journey through dreams, altered consciousness, night terrors and the collapse of reality.” But easier isn’t necessarily more interesting.
The genre-bending metal band has taken its already expansive sound—progressive, melodic black and death metal, cinematic orchestration and technical musicianship—and pushed it into an ambitious new territory with Ethereic Realms of the Night, a concept album accompanied by a companion film. The result is less a collection of songs than an immersive world.
In this conversation, IATT discusses the strange territory behind the album, the band’s evolution, their increasingly elaborate live setup, the role of AI in modern creativity, and the possibility that some of the mysteries we call supernatural may have more to do with the human mind than we realize. And, naturally, there was also the question of cheesesteaks.
