We recently caught up with Design the Skyline to talk about their journey, the controversy behind their viral single “Surrounded by Silence,” life on the road, and what fans can expect in the future. Here’s how it went down.
From Demo to Internet Explosion
Capital Chaos TV: First off, let’s talk about the single “Surrounded by Silence.” It got a lot of attention online—some good, some… not so good. What’s the story behind it?
Design the Skyline:
Honestly, it started as just a demo. Then we made a video for it, and it blew up—but not in the way we expected. It got a lot of hate. Now, we don’t even really associate ourselves with it anymore. It’s in the past.
The Meaning Behind “Nevaeh”
Capital Chaos TV: I noticed your album is titled Nevaeh—“heaven” spelled backward. What inspired that?
Design the Skyline:
It came from a mix of ideas. There was a lot of experimentation. We threw a bunch of stuff together creatively—even literally out of the dumpster sometimes. (laughs)
Signing with Victory Records
Capital Chaos TV: How did you end up signing with Victory Records?
Design the Skyline:
They came to one of our shows. It was kind of out of nowhere—we didn’t expect it, but we’re really stoked about it.
On Haters and Public Perception
Capital Chaos TV: Let’s be honest—haters are going to hate. How do you deal with the backlash?
Design the Skyline:
Yeah, it was mostly after that first music video. People judged us without hearing the full album. But after Nevaeh dropped, a lot of people actually changed their minds.
Hate is always going to be there. You can’t get rid of it, so we just roll with it. We’re getting to travel the world—so even with the hate, it’s worth it.
Life on the Road
Capital Chaos TV: How’s the tour going so far?
Design the Skyline:
It’s been awesome. Nothing too crazy has happened yet—but we’ll see. (laughs)
Capital Chaos TV: What’s next for you guys?
Design the Skyline:
Right now, we’re on tour. In Dying Arms will be joining us soon, and after that, we’ve got a headlining tour coming up. We’re pumped.
.
From High School to Headliners
Capital Chaos TV: You guys seem tight. How long have you known each other?
Design the Skyline:
Since high school. We all sat at the same lunch table our freshman year. It’s wild to think how far we’ve come since then.
Texas vs. California
Capital Chaos TV: What’s the difference between life in Texas and California?
Design the Skyline:
Texas is… boring. We get home, and after a day, we’re like “Let’s get back on the road.”
But Sundays? Sunday Funday for sure.
The Lyrics and the Look
Capital Chaos TV: Who writes the lyrics?
Design the Skyline:
A lot of it comes from personal experience—some hard times, stuff we’ve gone through. We just kept writing and turned all of that into music.
Capital Chaos TV: Let’s talk about your look. A lot of people have labeled you “scene” or “emo.” Thoughts?
Design the Skyline:
People love labels. Like, “Oh, he’s a punker” or “they’re scene.” But honestly, we did the whole look in our first video for attention—we knew it would get a reaction.
Capital Chaos TV: What’s going on with your hair now?
Design the Skyline:
They said one of us had the biggest scene hair ever! (laughs) We’re just doing our thing. All attention is good attention.
Message to the Fans
Capital Chaos TV: Anything you want to say to fans—or to people who haven’t heard your music?
Design the Skyline:
Listen to the album. Buy it.
And thanks to everyone who’s stuck with us and gave us a second chance.
A Little Extra Fun…
Capital Chaos TV: Let’s switch gears. Are you guys single? What’s going on for Valentine’s Day?
Design the Skyline:
Some of us are taken, some are looking for love every day. (laughs)
One of us is looking for someone with great nails… and who enjoys long walks on the beach.
Capital Chaos TV: Favorite video games?
Design the Skyline:
Castlevania, for sure.
Final Thoughts
Capital Chaos TV: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us. We’re excited to see what’s next for you—and I’m sure Victory Records is happy to have you on board.
Design the Skyline:
Thank you!
