Amon Amarth Annihiltates San Francisco – Live Show Review

The first time I saw Amon Amarth was a few years back on a Mayhem Festival tour at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View California and I wasn’t too impressed with the band. But I chalked it up to a notoriously bad sound system at that venue because I was familiar with a few of their albums and found myself enjoying them more and more throughout the years.

Lets fast forward to the headline show they just performed on 05/20/16 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco in support of their latest release Jomsviking (which by the way is a killer album). With Exmortus and Entombed AD opening the show I’m glad I went with my gut with Amon Amarth because they were nothing short of incredible. With the big Viking himself Johan Hegg on vocals leading the attack you were made to feel throughout the entire 19 song, almost 2 hour long set you were one with the Viking clan and being prepared for war.

The set list was a great mix of old and new and never let up. From the opening note of The Pursuit of Vikings until the last cord of Twilight of the Thunder God rang out it was a non-stop call for blood, war and Viking Pride. The crowd young and old was fully on board and the mosh pit was active and relentless all night. From 10 year old kids to 65 year old men and everything in between, it by far was the most diverse pit I had ever seen.

Amon Amarth were incredibly tight sounding despite having a new drummer. Jocke Wallgren joined the band just before this latest North American tour kicked off in early April, and you’d never be able to tell. The rhythm section was powerful and loud with a continuous double bass drums assaulting your ears and a heavy bass line flowing while the dual guitars kept up those classic melodic Death Metal riffs that every Metal head enjoys accompanied by whaling guitar solos. Bring in to the mix the Big Johns growling vocals and it’s a perfect mixture to complete a tremendously satisfying sound.

Pick up the latest album Jomsviking and get ready to set sail on a journey in the day of the life of a Viking. For those who haven’t seen Amon Amarth, I suggest you do so. You’ll thank me later.    Gene A. Gaona
