Interview: Doom, Desert Island Discs, and Dripping Sweat at a Sold-Out San Francisco Show with KHEMMIS

Fresh off the release of Hunted and riding a wave of critical acclaim, Denver doom metal heavyweights Khemmis rolled into San Francisco’s Parkside for a sold-out night of crushing riffs and sweat-soaked celebration. With Decibel Magazine naming Hunted its Album of the Year, the band found themselves in unfamiliar territory: widespread recognition for a group that built its reputation through relentless work, collaboration, and a deep love of heavy music.

Before the show-induced dehydration fully set in, Capital Chaos TV caught up with Phil Pendergast, Ben Hutcherson, Dan Beiers, and Zach Coleman to talk about the success of Hunted, songwriting, beer, gear, future plans, and why everyone should probably listen to more ZZ Top.

As the interview wrapped up, one thing became clear: Khemmis wasn’t acting like a band enjoying a breakthrough moment. They were acting like a band already focused on the next riff, the next record, and the next opportunity to get louder.

From sold-out clubs and Album of the Year honors to future recordings and festival appearances, the group’s trajectory was clearly accelerating. Yet beneath the growing recognition remained the same collaborative spirit that brought four musicians together through Craigslist ads, graduate school conversations, and a shared love of heavy music.

And if there was one piece of advice they wanted fans to remember above all else?

Listen to more ZZ Top.
