Another Planet Entertainment has been producing live shows all over the region and with
great success. If the recent sold out TV Girl shows on December 1st and 2nd were any
indication, it would seem their talent buyers are dialed in to the younger generation and then
some. For those lucky enough to actually get tickets (the shows sold out instantaneously),
these shows were most definitely one for the ages.

For the uninitiated, TV Girl’s special brand of “hypnotic pop” music is steeped heavily in 60’s
fare as evidenced by the group’s intuitive use of samples. Their Spotify numbers to date are
staggering with the most popular track, “Lovers Rock,” clocking an astounding 633,000,000
plays. Coming in at second is “Not Allowed” with 499,000,000 listens, while third place
belongs to the highly infectious “Cigarettes Out The Window.”
For those lucky 2,800 patrons who attended Friday night’s show, the line coming in
stretched over the span of over three blocks and was spilling into yet a fourth. And while the
greater percentage of those in attendance were young females glued to their phones taking
countless selfies between openers Jordana and the headliner, there was certainly no shortage
of enthusiasm once Los Angeles’ own TV Girl hit the stage.
The electro-pop styling of TV Girl’s catalog worked wonders in a live setting. Led by singer
Brad Petering and his cohorts Wyatt Harmon and Jason Wyman, the live band with two
back-up vocalists ran through a 21 song set that never let up. Propelled by the screams of
countless teenagers, singer Petering made good use of his time between songs poking fun at
his fans in such a way that even they didn’t get they were part of his inside jokes.
At times, some of his musings bordered on the completely silly and purposely redundant as
he pimped their merchandise while using it hilariously as the punchline. In the end, however,
it was the sun glass-wearing and always anecdotal Petering who got the last laugh.
The band’s fourth and latest record, ‘Grapes Upon The Vine,’ was released earlier this year
and received a huge reception. Of course, it was fan favorites like “French Exit,” “Louise.”
“Hate Yourself,” and “Pantyhose” – all from the first record – that really got the crowd’s
screams worked into a fever pitch. Other highlights included “Taking What’s Not Yours” and
the encore which featured “Lovers Rock.”
Perhaps the only distraction from the group’s live show was the fault of its own fans who,
sadly, documented nearly all of the show on their smartphones filming instead of visually
participating. At times, it was impossible to concentrate on the show with the sea of handheld
video screens clearly blocking a clear view of the stage.
If the group’s furiously upward trajectory is any indication, expect them to return at the
much larger 8,500 capacity Greek Theatre where Another Planet also stages shows. Odds are
Brad and company will still be rambling off jokes and condescending musings next time
around, but something tells us all its crowd will be a little older and, of course, soon ready to
finish his sentences.
