DOUG PIERCY on NEFARIOUS, the Bay Area Thrash Legacy, and the Making of Metal History

Bay Area thrash metal has always been about community, grit, and pushing boundaries—and few people embody that spirit like Doug Piercy. Best known as a founding member of Heathen and the producer behind the legendary Legacy demo, Doug recently sat down with Steve “Zetro” Souza on Zetro’s Toxic Vault to talk about the past, the present, and the future.

From early days at Prairie Sun Studios to the formation of a new all-star project, Nefarious, this conversation dives deep into metal history, recording realities before Pro Tools, and why the Bay Area scene still matters today.

Doug’s latest project, Nefarious, didn’t start as a band—it started as an idea. After the end of his recent run with Blind Illusion, Doug found himself sitting on a massive collection of riffs and unfinished songs. Rather than let them collect dust, he reached out to longtime collaborator Will Carroll (Death Angel).

Recording began organically, with weekend sessions at Tom Gears’ studio, where drums could be properly tracked. Guitars, bass, and vocals were handled at Doug’s own studio. The project quickly gained momentum, and before long, Rick Hunolt (Exodus) joined in, adding solos and energy that pushed the material to the next level.

From preserving priceless tape archives to launching new music on international stages, Doug Piercy remains as driven and influential as ever. Nefarious isn’t just a side project—it’s a continuation of Bay Area thrash’s legacy, powered by experience, authenticity, and a refusal to slow down.

The Origins of Nefarious

Following the breakup of Blind Illusion after a successful but turbulent European tour supporting Wrath of the Gods, Piercy found himself sitting on a large amount of unreleased material. Rather than letting it fade, he reached out to Will Carroll (Death Angel) to collaborate on what initially started as a solo project.

Recording began at Tom Gears’ studio, with Carroll tracking drums in a proper drum room and Piercy handling guitars, bass, and vocals in his own studio. The chemistry was immediate, and songs began coming together quickly—often two per weekend.

As the project evolved, Rick Hunolt (Exodus) joined in to contribute guitar solos, pushing the sound further into classic Bay Area thrash territory.

Assembling the Lineup

With music piling up, attention turned to vocals. Piercy worked with several singers, including Mark McGee (Ancient Mariner), whose talent was undeniable but whose academic commitments made touring unrealistic.

Eventually, Katon W. De Pena (Hirax) joined the project. Piercy produced the vocals closely—writing lyrics, guiding phrasing, and shaping performances—resulting in a complete album that remained secret during production.

A New Vocal Era

Nefarious has since welcomed Sean Rivera (Coffin Hunters) as the band’s new vocalist. Rivera re-recorded all vocals for streaming releases, delivering powerful, precise performances with minimal studio editing.

Physical releases will continue to feature the original recordings, while digital platforms will reflect the current lineup moving forward.

Piercy remains fully focused on Nefarious while also sitting on an extensive archive of unreleased material, including early demos from Exodus, Heathen, and other Bay Area projects. Digitizing this material is a long-term goal, preserving an important piece of thrash metal history.

If you’re a fan of real metal, real history, and real musicianship, keep your eyes on Nefarious—and your horns up.
