AMIENSUS’ Reclamation Pt. I Album Is Dense But Sustaining First Listen

Minnesotan metal musicians Amiensus are finally back with their unique spin on post-black metal, prog, melodic death metal, and much more. Compared to their stellar previous record Abreaction, this one overall has more clean vocals and acoustic guitar passages. But is still heavy and epic none the less.

This band in recent years have always impressed me with how seamlessly they write multiple sub-genres together. Riffs that collide with each other so cohesively that when looking back and realizing they were almost different vibes you wonder how did it work? In the end it just always flows. Song writing and central themes comes first for these guys. They are not tied to one riff only in the song per se.

Their second track (and probably my favorite) of the album “Reverie” is instantly cathartic in the first few seconds. A melancholic approach with the melodies but inviting and captivating. Self-reflection soundscapes. The guitars in the next section are so melodic on the counter parts that it keeps pushing the theme forward in an even more inspiring way. The blasting from the drums is consistent and powerful.

Another noticeable aspect of this song is how great the clean vocals are. The harmonies on the chorus are incredible and the duality with harsh vocals gives it even more flavor.

Intro acoustic guitar journeys like on “Sun and Moon” give you a sense of traveling with an unknown destination. Moving forward regardless. This number is probably the most in depth and unique one of the album. Many layers and themes that intertwine and come back later in the song but in a new context.

Probably by the second or third listen I finally was like, “Ah I get it.” But when the understanding of the structure of the themes clicks, it is an outstanding feeling. The violins throughout the song are heartfelt and bring more life and romanticism.

A great thing that stood out to me on Reclamation Pt. I is the bass guitar sounds fretless and it makes the record have even more colors on its palette.

Again, this album is diverse. There are times where it is dark. But then there are other times where the guitars are extremely melodic and ethereal strings are in the background as well. The contrast keeps it interesting and makes you surrender your time with the songs. To pair the atmosphere even more so, take a hike in your near by area. Stand on top of a rock overlooking an ocean. Get lost in the woods. Or simply go on a walk. Some activity as long as your outside.

Reclamation Part II is even more special and enters slightly new territory for the band but I will not divulge more just yet. Go voyage with Part I in the meantime.
