Concert Photo Review: KERRY KING @ House of Blues – Cleveland, OH

A rainy winter night in Cleveland set the stage for Kerry King’s solo project debut at the Cleveland House of Blues. Dimming of the lights and plenty of smoke pour out as “Diablo” plays over the house speakers, ramping up the crowd as the thrash legend walks out on stage.

The band opens with “Where I Reign”, and the crowd surfing ensues. Playing mostly material from King’s debut solo album, the band is a tight unit, playing and complementing one another perfectly. With Phil Demmel intertwining leads with King really standing out. Mark Osegueda is acting as the frontman and holding the crowd to a high standard of mosh pit activity. This band has something working for it in a live setting. Not to be ignored were some songs from King’s past. “At Dawn They Sleep” was a nice track for a throwback, and of course, what would the evening be without “Reign in Blood?” To my surprise, a mini tribute to Iron Maiden was the highlight for me, as a great cover of “Purgatory” and “Killers” was played to raw perfection. Ending the night with the title track, “From Hell I Rise”, seems to be an appropriate ending for a high-quality old-school vibe thrash show. I, for one, highly recommend catching King and his band should the opportunity arise.
