From the pioneers who shaped deathcore to paranormal encounters in the woods, DISTANT’s Alan Grnja opens up about the genre’s evolution, the human side of extreme metal, and the deeply personal themes behind their new album, Into Despair.

Deathcore has come a long way from its early MySpace-era roots. What began as an explosive collision of death metal and metalcore has grown into a constantly evolving scene, blending brutal breakdowns, slam, beatdown, industrial influences, and increasingly ambitious production. But for Dutch-Slovak deathcore outfit Distant, the genre’s past, present, and future are all connected by one essential ingredient: authenticity.

In this interview, Alan discusses the bands that helped shape deathcore, the importance of veterans like Suffocation and Dying Fetus, the controversial culture of crowd killing, and the role of AI in modern music. He also opens up about the deeply personal subject matter behind the band’s album Into Despair and shares a bizarre experience that might make you think twice about sleeping in an isolated forest cottage.

Into Despair will be released on November 6. Pre-order here.
