We caught up with Arizona’s desert-fuzz rockers Fuzz Evil during their first trek through Northern California. What followed was a laid-back, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt conversation about music, vinyl, tour life, childhood inspirations, and why KISS might just be responsible for creating a monster (their drummer, that is).
“This is only my third show… and it’s already a blast.”
Drummer Orgo may be new to the lineup, but he’s already sweating it out and stealing the spotlight on stage. Filling in last-minute after the band’s original drummer couldn’t make the tour, Orgo jumped in—and it’s clear from the band’s chemistry that the fit is solid.
He and bassist Joey go way back to high school, and it shows in their banter and synergy. Add Joey’s brother Wayne on guitar and vocals, and you’ve got a tight trio with decades of shared musical DNA—literally.
First Time in NorCal
“This is our first run into Northern California,” says Wayne. “We’ve been through SoCal a few times, but the Bay Area’s got something special.”
From Sacramento, the band is headed up to Portland, Seattle, and Tacoma before heading back home. But the buzz is growing fast—and so is the reach of their new self-titled album, released on Battleground Records.
A Labor of Love… and Vinyl
The new record is two years in the making, carefully curated from piles of demos and ideas. “We started writing, then scratched some things, put together the best songs that really fit as a unit,” says Wayne.
As for the album art? That’s all in-house. Wayne co-founded Ghost Town Graphics, and the design was created specifically for vinyl from the start. “It transferred perfectly. We planned for vinyl. That was the dream.”
And yes—vinyl is available. Clear editions via Battleground, black ones on tour, and maybe even new colors if they make it to Europe.
“I’m still waiting on those superpowers…”
Orgo’s love for music started early—like, age three early. “My dad brought home a VHS of KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. I thought if I picked up drumsticks, I’d get powers like lasers and fire breath. Still waiting.”
He comes from a long musical lineage, including a grandfather who toured briefly with Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper. Now, his 5-year-old daughter plays drums and sings Slipknot songs. “It’s just in the blood.”
“There’s something about holding a record.”
The band loves vinyl not just for its sound—but for what it represents. “It’s something you can hold, open, look at, appreciate. The artwork, liner notes, the ritual of dropping the needle… it’s all part of the experience,” says Orgo.
“Last night, we ran into another Arizona band while eating late,” Wayne recalls. “We traded CDs, and the first thing they said was, ‘Whoa—where did this artwork come from?’ That reaction—it means something.”
New Music Already in the Works
Fuzz Evil isn’t slowing down. They’re finishing up a split release with a Texas band, coming out next year on Ripple Music.
They also included two extra tracks on the CD version of their current album:
- Glitter Bones (from a previous split with Chiefs)
- Born of Iron (a digital release, now on CD)
So if you’re a physical-media collector, the CD’s got a little extra love.
Influences & Current Rotations
Asked about what they’re listening to on tour, the band shouts out:
- Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
- Truckfighters (whose latest record is a favorite)
- Skanska Mord
- Monomyth (Wayne: “One of my favorite bands right now—trippy, beautiful music.”)
Also getting some appreciation: Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg, for carrying the torch as both his father’s and Joey Jordison’s successor. “He’s his own player. He brings something new to the band and makes people watch,” says Orgo.
Fuzz Evil’s Future (And Possibly a Roller Coaster Drum Kit?)
The energy’s high. The laughs are constant. And the chemistry between the guys feels more like a band that’s been together for decades—not one that just added a new drummer a few days ago.
“I tried to convince them to let me build a roller coaster drum kit,” Orgo jokes. “But apparently that doesn’t fit in the van.”
Maybe next tour.
