GÜRSCHACH Interview: On Metallica Covers, Hate Comments, and Farting on Stage

Bay Area heavy thrash band Gürschach sat down (well, two-thirds of them did) with Capital Chaos TV for a wild, hilarious, and oddly introspective conversation about their viral Metallica “St. Anger” cover, the chaos of 2020, and life in an independent metal band. Scotty and X pulled no punches while reflecting on fan reactions, social media weirdness, and yes—even farting mid-performance.

Where’s the Rest of the Band?

Scotty: “It’s just two of us today. Leyland went off for Thanksgiving, and Daniel… well, he’s Daniel—but he’s dead.”

(They clarify he’s not actually dead. Metal humor.)

On the “St. Anger” Cover Video

Gürschach’s reimagining of Metallica’s much-maligned St. Anger title track turned heads—with over 100k views on YouTube.

X: “We started filming at Redwood Metal Fest back in 2019, recorded the track later, and finished the video by July 2020. It took a year, with rotating crew members and COVID delays. It was a labor of love—and frustration.”

Why YouTube and Not…Pornhub?

Scotty: “We tried that with another video. Turns out, people on Pornhub want, well…porn.”

X: “Facebook’s content policies are too vague, and honestly, they could just delete your page. YouTube was safer.”

Have You All Seen Each Other Naked?

X: “Nope. Closest we’ve come is boxers in a pool.”

Scotty: “I did pee in a cup on tour once—but it wasn’t a team activity.”

Farting on Stage?

Scotty: “Oh yeah. I’ve definitely done that.”

X: “I’ve burped mid-scream. Timing is everything.”

On the Viral Reaction and Hate Comments

Their St. Anger cover drew a surprising mix of admiration and hate.

X: “We knew Metallica fans would come for us. It’s St. Anger. But the hate wasn’t that bad. One guy said we were the ‘Greta Van Fleet of Metallica,’ which confused us more than anything.”

Scotty: “Was it a diss? A compliment? No idea.”

They’ve since monetized a reaction video to the hate comments, which is performing well.

More Reimagined Metallica Covers Coming?

X: “Maybe, but not soon. It was a lot of work. Unless someone wants to commission us, we’ve got original material we’re focusing on.”

Replacing the Big Four?

Scotty: “Anthrax out. Testament in.”

X: “Forget all of them. The concept of a ‘Big Four’ is too commercial. Thrash isn’t about that.”

Scotty (laughing): “Okay, but if I had to? Metallica out. Exodus in.”

Favorite Metallica Covers—By Others

  • Death’s version of “Battery”
  • Motörhead’s “Whiplash”
  • Orbit Culture’s “Hardwired”
  • Mastodon’s “Orion” (though the tone felt weird)

Favorite Songs Metallica Has Covered

  • “Astronomy” (Blue Öyster Cult)
  • “Loverman” (Nick Cave)
  • “Whiskey in the Jar” (Thin Lizzy version)
  • “Green Hell” (Misfits) – Fun fact: Metallica had to call Danzig for the lyrics because they weren’t printed anywhere.

Does Lars Ulrich’s Drumming Suck?

Scotty: “Honestly? It’s worse than people think.”

X: “They edit a lot. People think Lars was a god in the ’80s. He wasn’t. Behind-the-scenes footage shows just how off-time he really was.”

Most Useless Online Music Service?

X: “Napster. Who even goes there anymore?”

Scotty: “MySpace tried to be a music hub again… it didn’t work. ReverbNation still exists—we’ve even gotten some legit gigs and an award from it—but it’s no longer a one-stop shop.”

What’s Next for Gürschach?

Scotty: “We’ve got a new song coming soon—can’t say much yet due to an NDA, but it’s different. Less of a major release, more of a teaser for what’s next.”

X: “And we’re always writing. Just not trying to live on hate comments.”

From YouTube virality to body humor and deep dives into metal history, Gürschach proves they’re not just another thrash band—they’re self-aware, hardworking, and ready to call out the weirdness of the music industry while having a blast doing it.

Stay tuned for new releases and more offbeat honesty from these guys.
