Hailing from Oakland, CA, DRESS THE DEAD released their debut EP, AEther on June 27th via Blood Blast Distribution. Craig Locicero, from Forbidden, originally formed DRESS THE DEAD with The Haunted vocalist Peter Dolving in 2017. When Dolving left the group, the band struggled to find the right vocalist. While going through vocalist tryouts, Locicero received a text from Kayla Dixon.
Kayla Dixon, her vocal range, she can go from growls to screams faster than we can blink and it is mind blowing. Her range can go from deep bass tone to soprano so quickly it’ll make you swoon. She is absolutely a breathtaking vocalist. One minute she will be singing to you in a melody then in the next minute she will be singing in a growl that is absolutely sexy and unexpected. Then she goes back to her sweet melody in the same song. It’s absolutely perfect. It sounds like you’re in the same room with her having a conversation.
Mark Hernandez on drums will keep you hypothesized. His beats are dramatic and on point. His timing is perfect. His footing is strong. He pulls the rest of the band in with his performance. His solos are awe-inspiring.
James Walker on bass. A very powerful bassist which is hard to find sometimes in this genre. His solos are smooth. His tone is great. Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate him from the lead guitarist and that’s hard to do in this genre.
Mikey Rowan on rhythm guitar. His playing is very smooth and striking. His solos are very stunning and impressive. His timing is perfect with the lead guitarist and that is very impressive. They work extremely well together.
Craig Locicero: on lead guitar. His tones are very pleasing. His playing is so awe-inspiring. His solos sometimes sound like a bass guitar and that’s a good thing. They are also very impressive. Between his timing with the bassist and rhythm guitarist being practically perfect I am very impressed. The band as a whole are incredible. They work and play very well together.
The song that caught my attention the most is “Hallowed Head” because Kayla talks about not belonging here watching him out there. His head is hallowed she feels betrayed. She’d rather betray him then end up in chains she doesn’t belong here. It’s all about him. Deceiving himself now. Someday they’ll see him… Gather the people around you don’t belong there. I can totally relate to that song.
