Whenever a death metal band with a considerable following eventually whittles itself down to one original member, for the most part, the end result is a loss of fan base and, more importantly, the end of the band’s successful run.
In the case of Montreal’s Cryptopsy, that assumption couldn’t be any farther off. And while drummer Flo Mounier is the group’s mainstay, he is rounded out by longtime guitarist Christian Donaldson (since 2005), vocalist Matt McGachy (since 2007), and bassist Olivier “Oli” Pinard (since 2012) who all played on the band’s last batch of menacing EPs, ‘The Book of Suffering – Tome I’ and ‘The Book of Suffering – Tome II.’
The band’s current tour is dubbed ‘Carnival Of Death’ and finds them releasing a brand, spanking new record on Nuclear Blast Records, ‘As Gomorrah Burns.’ For those expecting a repeat of 1994’s ‘Blasphemy Made Flesh’ or 1996’s seminal ‘None So Vile,’ you’ll be pleasantly surprised the group to a sharp left turn and, in doing so, only got heavier, faster, and more precise.

“As we were writing the new album, we kept asking ourselves if the music was too dark—too ominous,” said singer Matt McGachy. ”We were unsure that it would fit into the realm of what Cryptopsy had created over the past 20 years. As the songs came together, we saw the melding of darkness and groove-based riffs ‘vibed’ perfectly within the Cryptopsy ‘sound sphere.’ We also wanted to let our riffs breathe longer for the first time since ‘None So Vile.’ We take forever to write and create these moments, so we decided to give them a tad more air and let them be repeated a few more times than we would have in the past. We are back and I want our fans to know we’re more than a legacy band. Yes, we have had massive cult favorite albums—like None So Vile—but we are creating modern and relevant extreme music 30 years later. We’re so proud of As Gomorrah Burns, and we can’t wait for you to hear it!”
In keeping with the band’s mystique and ever-evolving sound, the group holed up in a cabin in the forests of Quebec. If you’re imagining something out of the ‘Evil Dead’ movie, it would seem you’re not far off. And although the recording process was looked back upon with considerable ire, the final product was far greater (and heavier) than what the quartet expected.

Also on this heavier-than-thou bill are Los Angeles’ Abysmal Dawn, Baltimore’s Visceral Disgorge, Minneapolis’ Reaping Asmodeia, and Chicago’s Warforged.
