For more than 35 years, UK death metal pioneers Cancer have been crafting some of the most intense and unyielding music in the genre. Now, they’re back with Inverted World, the long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Shadow Gripped. Set to drop on April 25th via Peaceville Records, the album marks a return to their iconic mix of razor-sharp riffs, guttural vocals, and unrelenting fury. Prepare for a bleak and brutal exploration of dystopia, corruption, and existential dread.

Inverted World is a modern death metal album that prioritizes relevance over the genre’s typical gore themes. Unlike bands like Dying Fetus, Cancer opts for a more balanced, thrash-influenced style.
While death metal’s dystopian and gory themes are overdone, Cancer doesn’t offer much new insight. Their take lacks the fresh perspective seen in bands like Obituary, who deliver a more nihilistic, carefree attitude.
Musically, the album features strong guitar work but can feel drawn-out, lacking impact. Overall, Inverted World is a solid, atmospheric album with standout production but doesn’t quite rise above its familiar themes and straightforward songwriting. It’s a solid listen for death metal fans but lacks innovation.
