Interview: Zack Miranowic of DISCIPLES OF VERITY on NEXUS, Metal Crossovers, and Creative Evolution

Fueled by an insatiable urge to create and collaborate, Disciples of Verity (DOV) are challenging the very fabric of modern heavy music. Featuring an all-star lineup—Corey Glover (Living Colour), Corey Pierce (God Forbid), George Pond (Negative Sky, Swim The Current), Mark Monjoy (Sekond Skyn), and Zack Miranowic (Sekond Skyn, Riversend)—this metal juggernaut is pushing boundaries with their unique blend of Hardcore, Metalcore, and Active Rock.

Their latest project, NEXUS, is a powerful follow-up to their debut album Pragmatic Sanction, and showcases a more melodic, layered, and emotionally resonant sound. The album is slated for release in 2025 via TLG/ZOID and distributed through Virgin Music Group.

We caught up with guitarist Zack Miranowic to talk about the band’s growth, creative process, and the meaning behind their new single, “In My Eyes.”

“In My Eyes” explores unity and empathy through perspective—how do you personally connect with that message, especially in today’s divided world?

To me, the message conveyed in In My Eyes is about unconditional love for someone, even in a world that is at constant odds with itself. Our loved one—whether it be a relative, a spouse, or even an animal—is our sense of home and solitude, despite any of their faults.

The concept of “a new breed of crossover Metal” is bold—what does that mean to you as a band, and how does it manifest in your songwriting and sound on NEXUS?

The “crossover of heavy metal” is meant to be all-encompassing of our many, many influences. With each single we release, our listeners get a glimpse into the diversity of our sound and our individual takes on hard rock and heavy metal at large.

With such diverse musical backgrounds, how do you navigate creative differences in the studio? Has that ever led to unexpected breakthroughs?

Navigating creative differences can be challenging! But it’s always important to keep an open mind when trying new ideas to see what works and what doesn’t. When it does work, you get something totally new and unique.

It’s been four years since your debut—how have you evolved as a band since Pragmatic Sanction, both musically and personally?

I believe with this new record we’ve expanded our threshold for dishing out something heavy, while also touching on previously unexplored territory—especially with the use of more ambient guitar tones and more melodic vocal phrasings.

Given the intense themes and heavy hooks on NEXUS, what emotions or thoughts do you hope listeners walk away with after hearing the full record?

I think people who listen to the record for the first time can expect to be taken down a path of ups and downs. There’s a strong sense of empathy throughout this album that deals with themes of getting knocked down and getting back up in the face of adversity. That’s something that will always resonate.

You’ve worked with Sahaj Ticotin, who’s produced some major rock acts—what did he bring to NEXUS that changed or elevated your vision for the album?

Sahaj is immensely talented and brought a lot of great ideas to this record! Like I mentioned earlier, there’s a much stronger emphasis on melody this time around. The vocal phrasing and lyrics are more fleshed out and will definitely stick with listeners long after the first play.

If Ozzy Osbourne walked into the studio during a NEXUS session, what track would you play for him first—and what do you think his reaction would be?

If Ozzy rose from the void and floated into the studio, I’m sure he would’ve loved what he was hearing! The track I’d likely play for him is “Falling Down.” To me, that song strikes the perfect balance between heaviness and melodic catchiness—it really embodies the spirit of NEXUS.

What’s one piece of gear or recording technique that became essential to shaping the sonic identity of NEXUS?

This time around, we really went hard on rhythm tracking. I laid down 42 rhythm guitar tracks across 12 songs—not including solos and melody parts! That gave George all the tools he needed to create the gigantic sound you hear on this record. I also had a lot of fun experimenting with the clean Gojira Neural DSP plug-in during the writing process.

If Disciples of Verity were forced to enter a battle of the bands… as a literal gladiator team—who’s wielding what weapon, and which member is most likely to accidentally hit a teammate mid-battle?

That’s a tough one, but if I had to pick a weapon for myself, I’d go with a Gene Simmons-style AXE-guitar! And honestly, I’d be the one most likely to hit someone mid-battle—half the time I can’t see anything because of my hair and bad eyesight!

With NEXUS on the horizon, Disciples of Verity are poised to redefine what modern heavy metal can be. Blending intense musicianship with empathy, perspective, and raw power, the band isn’t just making noise—they’re starting a movement.

Stay tuned for the release of NEXUS in 2025 and stream “In My Eyes” now on all major platforms via TLG/ZOID and Virgin Music Group.
