Another stacked night of Northern California metal took over Goldfield Trading Post in Roseville on June 25, bringing together rising local talent and Bay Area thrash veterans for a show that never lost momentum. From the opening notes of Eternal Terror to Nefarious closing out the evening, every band gave the crowd something to remember, while longtime fans were treated to a healthy dose of Bay Area thrash nostalgia. Eternal Terror wasted no time setting the pace, opening the evening with a focused, hard-hitting performance that immediately grabbed the crowd’s attention. Their combination of aggressive riffs and driving rhythms made it clear they weren’t interested in simply warming up the audience. Every song carried plenty of intensity, and the band attacked the stage with confidence well beyond an opening slot. By the time they wrapped up, Goldfield was fully awake and ready for everything that followed.

Unprovoked took that early energy and cranked it up another notch with a fast, relentless set built around heavy grooves and raw aggression. Their stage presence matched the music perfectly, keeping the audience engaged from beginning to end. Tight musicianship and an uncompromising attitude gave every song extra weight. The crowd responded with plenty of movement near the stage as the pit came alive for the first time that evening. It was an impressive performance that continued building the momentum heading into the night’s veteran acts.

By now, Parabellum has become one of those bands you can count on to deliver every single time, and June 25 was no exception. Their performance was once again a lesson in precision, with razor-sharp guitar work, crushing rhythm, and seamless chemistry between every member on stage. Each song flowed effortlessly into the next, keeping the energy consistently high throughout the set. The band looked completely at home under the lights, feeding off the crowd’s enthusiasm while sounding every bit as polished as ever. Simply put, Parabellum was as good as ever.

For many in attendance, Defiance’s return to Sacramento was one of the biggest highlights of the evening, marking their first local appearance in quite some time. The Bay Area thrash veterans sounded every bit as powerful as fans hoped, delivering classic songs with the same aggression that made them legends decades ago. During the set, vocalist Steev Esquivel asked who remembered seeing Defiance at the legendary Omni in Oakland, and I couldn’t raise my hand fast enough. Those shows helped define the Bay Area thrash scene, and hearing him bring up those memories instantly transported many of us back to that era. After the performance, I had the opportunity to spend some time backstage talking with Steev about those unforgettable 1980s Bay Area thrash days, sharing stories that brought back a flood of great memories. I also caught up with Billy Garoutte, who was hanging out with members of Sacramento’s new metal scene, Scream Evil, along with the always-notorious Dave Chapman, making for one of the night’s funniest impromptu photo opportunities. Between the conversations, the laughs, and a blistering performance that reminded everyone why Defiance remains a cornerstone of Bay Area thrash, their return to Sacramento felt like much more than just another stop on the calendar.

Closing out the night was Nefarious, who delivered another crushing performance that demonstrated why they’ve become one of the strongest modern thrash bands on the scene. I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to Tambre Bryant for giving me the opportunity to shoot the band up close and personal throughout the evening. Although this was my third time photographing Nefarious, this show offered something special because I was able to spend time with the band backstage before, during, and after their set. Those conversations revealed exactly what comes across on stage—they’re genuinely humble, approachable musicians who appreciate everyone supporting what they do. Guitar legend Doug Piercy went out of his way to help gather everyone together after the show so I could capture a group photo, a gesture that perfectly reflected the band’s down-to-earth attitude. Once they hit the stage, however, the friendly personalities gave way to an absolutely ferocious performance. Their musicianship was razor sharp, every riff landed with authority, and the entire band played with the confidence of seasoned veterans. The crowd stayed engaged from the opening note until the final song, feeding off the band’s relentless energy. Nefarious closed the evening in dominant fashion, putting an exclamation point on one of Goldfield’s strongest metal lineups of the year.

Some concerts are simply about the music, while others become a reunion of generations that share the same passion for heavy metal. June 25 at Goldfield Trading Post was definitely the latter, bringing together veterans of the Bay Area thrash movement alongside a new wave of Northern California bands carrying that torch forward. From Eternal Terror and Unprovoked setting the pace, to another stellar performance from Parabellum, Defiance’s long-awaited Sacramento return, and Nefarious delivering a crushing finale, every band brought something memorable to the stage. Add in the backstage conversations, old friendships, plenty of laughs, and the chance to capture it all through the lens, and it became one of those nights that reminds you why the local metal scene continues to thrive. If this show proved anything, it’s that Northern California’s metal community is every bit as strong today as it was decades ago—and judging by the crowd’s response, it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
