Miscreance return with their sophomore album Reminiscence with more technical riffs and varied writing
The Italian technical death/thrash metal four piece are back with their new album Reminiscence, which comes out this Friday August 28th on Season of Mist Records. If you’re into bands such as Sadus or Coroner or even more contemporary ones like Cryptic Shift and Blood Incantation, this should be right up your alley.
Their songs are to the point and fast like most thrash artist do. But they offer so much more with progressive elements and song structures. Their sound on this one gives a primitive feel with having percussion, digeridoo, flute, and a berimbau thanks to guest musician Leo Di Angilla. Those instruments are only on a few tracks it seems and there more of a background or extra layer to the songs. Although they do give another level to the sound that is very fitting to the lyrical themes on ancient civilizations and psychic powers.
The track “Synaptic Cortex Dissection” is a banger with heavy semi-dissonant chugging at the beginning. And then later catchy harmony riffs with progressive drumming that eventually speeds up even more. Towards the middle it eventually goes into an extremely melodic section that breaks out into an epic guitar solo reminiscent of Death’s mid to late era. And then the ending of the song ends in a funky rhythmic sound that somehow works for a unique closing.
Another notable track would be the “The Moaning Hill”. The second riff is a palm muted chugging riff, where the drums do a huge build up with for awhile. And then when the next riff strikes, the drums come in cohesively to the heavy as hell low end melodic riff nodding to the great Chuck Schuldiner again.
The album’s closer “Mirage” is their most psychedelic effort to date with many layers and dynamics. It is essentially an instrumental minus a few screams. The intro has clean guitars that are sort of neo-classical or jazzy. It felt similar to a melody off Cynic’s song “Textures” in their own way though. The heavy distorted guitars come very shortly though and the speed frenzy continues. The riffs are chaotic, fun and all over the place. From tempo changes to new directions at least a few times.
The two different guitar tones from Andrea Granauro and Tommaso Cappelletti accompany each other so well. Even though there is a lot going on in this track, the guitars are very melodic. With the ending distorted sliding riff that eventually morphs into acoustic guitar, which merges a beautiful counter harmony. When the song completes,
you are left feeling mesmerized in a trance and not knowing what you just consumed. A feeling where your thoughts were there temporarily but then dissipated into oblivion.
Even though prog/tech thrash bands have been around since the mid-80s, it is still a very complex genre to pull off so well and stand out in this day and age.
