Out from the darken land of Norway came Black Metal legends Dimmu Borgir stepping onto the smoky dimly lit stage at the the Cleveland Agora. On this night the crowd was to be served up some quality Norwegian Black Metal. 19 years have passed since the last time these legends graced Cleveland with their unholy presence and the crowd was in for a display of Black Metal mastery.
Opening with the fith track Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel from their latest opus , Grand Serpent Rising the tone was set for an evening of dark atmospheric indulgence. Second up was Mourning Place off of their release Enthroned Darkness Triumphant which surely pleased the fans of their older catalog. Next up was Kings of the Carnival Creation , always a staple in their setlist.
Led by the ever imposing Shagrath on vocals Dimmu plugged their way through a darkened mixture of new tracks as well as pleasing the old school with some vintage tracks such as Stormblast and The Insight and the Catharsis with the twin guitar attack of Silenoz and newest member Damage they had the crowd head banging their way into darkened glory. Drummer Daray pummeled his kit with a vengeance that would make Nick Barker , former drummer , proud. Not to be forgotten is bassist Victor Brandt pairing nicely with Daray creating a strong driving force for the Black Metal giants. Special mention to the keyboardist Gerlioz whom without they wouldn’t be able to create that darkened atmosphere.
Finishing the night out with Progenies of the Great Apocalypse seems to be the only way to end this masterful performance. Was 19’years worth the wait ? Let the pleased crowd decide that .please don’t take another 19 years to return to Cleveland.
