The Finnish metal veteran opens up about the band’s new album, AI-generated music, Finnish melancholy, paranormal mysteries, and why Insomnium refuses to chase trends.
For more than two decades, Insomnium have built their reputation on a distinctive combination of crushing melodic death metal, melancholy, atmosphere, and deeply introspective songwriting. Now, as the Finnish band approaches its 30th anniversary, bassist and vocalist Niilo Sevänen says the group has little interest in looking over its shoulder—or worrying about where the music industry is heading.
Their latest album, Another World, finds Insomnium returning toward the band’s classic sound while still pushing into unfamiliar territory. From a haunting new cover artwork by Travis Smith to experimental compositions, delicate vocals, brutal screams, and even the band’s first-ever cover song, the record appears designed to surprise without abandoning the identity that made Insomnium beloved in the first place.
And Sevänen isn’t particularly concerned about whether the modern music industry approves. Insomnium have unveiled their new album Netherworlds, set for a release via Century Media Records on October 16. Pre-Order now: https://insomnium.lnk.to/Netherworlds
